What to Know When Choosing a Dog Trainer
Choosing the right trainer is an important decision, and it’s worth taking the time to understand what truly matters.
The dog training industry is largely unregulated, which means there are no universal licensing requirements or standardized credentials. Because of this, experience, education, and reputation vary widely from trainer to trainer.
As you explore your options, here are a few thoughtful questions to consider:
• Does the trainer have an established professional website that clearly explains their services, philosophy, and experience?
social media can be helpful for sharing moments, but it should not be the sole source of information about a professional service.
• Do client reviews span multiple years, showing consistency rather than a short burst of recent activity?
• Is the trainer referred to by veterinarians or other respected professionals who regularly work with dogs?
• Are they members of long-standing professional organizations such as APDT or IACP, which require ongoing education and ethical standards?
Taking the time to ask these questions can help you feel confident that you are choosing the right support for both you and your dog.
